On June 21, Haiyang Nuclear Power Plant’s Unit 1 started to load nuclear fuel for the first time, making a key step toward connecting to the grid.

Haiyang Project, using the AP1000 nuclear power technology introduced from the U.S. Westinghouse, is developed and constructed by the State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC), a subsidiary of State Power Investment Corporation Limited (SPIC). The successful construction of Haiyang NPP is an important achievement made in the development of Gen III nuclear power technology in China.

During the construction of the Project, the National Nuclear Safety Administration of China (NNSA) implemented independent supervision over the entire construction process of Haiyang NPP Unit 1. The results of the review and nuclear safety supervision show that, the AP1000 nuclear power technology can meet the requirements of China’s nuclear safety regulations and standards, as well as the construction quality of Haiyang NPP Unit 1 reaches expected safety goals. By meeting all necessary technological requirements, the AP1000 nuclear power unit is authorized by NNSA to start fuel loading.
