On December 2, 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping and South African President Jacob Zuma jointly witnessed the signing of the Agreement on CAP1400 Project Management Cooperation between State Nuclear Power Technology Company (SNPTC), an SPIC member company, and South African Nuclear Energy Corporation SOC Ltd (NECSA) in Johannesburg, South Africa, which will play a significant role in promoting the development of CAP1400 projects in South Africa and the strategic cooperation in nuclear power sector between China and South Africa.
On December 4, 2015, President Xi attended the opening ceremony of the China-Africa Equipment Manufacturing Industry Exhibition, organized by the Chinese Ministry of Commence and the Department of Trade and Industry of South Africa, and visited SPIC¡¯s exhibit under President Zuma¡¯s accompany. Mr. Wang Binhua, Chairman of SPIC, made an introduction on the features of CAP1400 technology and the cooperation progress the two countries have made to date.
Since 2013, SNPTC has been developing the nuclear power market in South Africa and made much progress in the introduction of the CAP1400 technology. The framework agreement on nuclear power project cooperation was signed between the two governments in 2014, and multiple in-depth promotions have been carried out since then, thanks to which the safety, cost-effectiveness and project proposal regarding the CAP1400 technology won high praise from the South African government and expert team. According to the training agreement of nuclear power professionals between the two countries, SNPTC would provide training program for 200 South African personnel. Phase I of basic training involving 50 trainees has been successfully concluded, and was highly appreciated by the South African government and relevant nuclear power corporations. Phase II of professional training will commence in January, 2016 as scheduled.
