On August 13, 2015, the graduation ceremony for Phase I of South African Civil Nuclear Project Training Program, organized by State Nuclear Power Technology Company (SNPTC) was held in Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute, a subsidiary of SNPTC, marking the successful conclusion of the training program.
The training program is planned to be conducted in three phases: basic training, professional training and on-the-job training. Phase I of 4-month basic training started on April 22, 2015, and 50 South African trainees from Department of Energy (DOE), South African Nuclear Energy Corporation SOC Limited (NECSA), ESKOM, etc. attended the training in Beijing and Shanghai. Totally 41 well-chosen, experienced experts and lecturers from China Nuclear Safety Center, Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiaotong University gave lectures on a wide range of topics relevant to the design, procurement, manufacturing, construction, commissioning, operation maintenance and project management of Gen III nuclear power plants. All trainees worked very hard and achieved a lot. They all had a deep understanding of nuclear power projects, cutting-edge technology and Chinese culture as well through centralized training, specialist technical seminars, NPP construction site visit, communication with SNPTC engineers and Chinese culture experience. The trainees, their employers and the relevant authorities from South African government all expressed their recognition and affirmation and spoke highly of the training program. On the graduation ceremony, the trainees also gave their well-prepared theatrical performances about cultures of both countries to show their gratitude.
As an important part of the strategic cooperation between China and South Africa, the training program has received strong supports from the government, enterprises and universities of each country. Entrusted by NEA (China) and DOE (South Africa), SNPTC and NECSA signed the Agreement on the Training Program for South African Civil Nuclear Projects in February, 2014 and the training scheme in December, 2014.
