"Simultaneous generation of power, heat and desalinated water" Technology Demonstration Project Put into Operation in Haiyang

On May 11th, the technology demonstration project of ¡°simultaneous generation of power, heat and desalinated water¡± in Haiyang Nuclear Power Station of Shandong Province, P.R.China was put into operation. While providing power safely and stably, the station has for the first time achieved the simultaneous generation of fresh water and heat, offering a solution to the shortage of clean heating and fresh water and creating a new pathway in the use of nuclear to combat climate change.

 

 

The project was jointly built by Shandong Nuclear Power Company, a subsidiary of State Power Investment Corporation and Tsinghua University. Using extracted steam or residual heat from the nuclear unit as a driver to the water and heat co-generation configuration, the technology produces fresh water of 95 ¡æ, which is then transported to the user side through a pipeline, where the water and heat are separated. The heat enters into the thermal system, and the cooled water goes into the water supply system. During the process, the heat consumed in generating water is recovered and again used for urban heating, such that the production and delivery of water has basically achieved ¡°zero energy consumption¡±.

 

The technology has integrated the functions of two separated systems for providing heat and water, which reduces construction investment and operating costs, and improves energy and facility utilization.

 

 

According to estimates, a nuclear power unit of 1000MW, while achieving the main purpose of power generation, can supply ¡°zero-carbon¡± heat to residents in an area of 30,000,000m2 in a heating season and produce 30,000,000t fresh water of high quality in ¡°zero energy consumption¡± by using such technology.

 

The comprehensive utilization of nuclear energy will play a bigger role in achieving the goal of carbon reduction globally. It will be effective to combat global climate change, make a big difference in the development of clean energy in the world and play an important role in the sustainable development of the society.
