On September 12, AP1000 NI 38th quarterly management coordination meeting for the nuclear island project was held in Washington D.C., United States. Wei Suo, Party Member and Vice President of SPIC, Sun Wenke, Chief Engineer of SPIC, Liu Jing, Chairman of Sanmen Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., Zhang Zhen, Vice President of Shandong Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., and Liu Xingang, President of Westinghouse Electric Corporation Asia Region, attended the meeting.

All parties reviewed the current starting test progress of the four units (Sanmen No. 1 and 2 units, Haiyang No. 1 and 2 units), discussed the key problems in the progress and further arranged the follow-up work for the project. It has been unanimously agreed by all parties that from the loading of Sanmen No. 1 unit to the end of its performance testing, all the starting tests have been carried out smoothly under the supervision of State Nuclear Safety Bureau, whose test results fully met the requirements of the test outline and the whole completion ranked a high-level in the nuclear power industry. With the smooth progress of other 3 units starting tests, the 4 units of the AP1000-based project are expected to enter into commercial operation within the year, which fully demonstrates the advantage and advance of AP1000 technology.

Wei Suo affirmed the achievements of AP1000-based project construction and the importance of high-level quarterly coordination mechanism towards the smooth progress of the project. He emphasized that the commercialization of the units marked the starting of the NPP formal comprehensive operation. Under the leadership of the owner, all parties shall adhere to safety first, ensure the quality of work and the resource input, and make a good communication, coordination and experience feedback, to support the owner to successfully complete the follow-up tests and operations.

The meeting reviewed the achievements made in the ten-year project construction of the 4 units. The Chinese side thanked and approved the efforts paid by Westinghouse during the project construction, hoping that Westinghouse will continue to provide technical support during the unit test and looking forward to further cooperation with Westinghouse in the field of nuclear power. Westinghouse thanked China for its understanding and support and believed that the cooperation between Westinghouse and China on the AP1000-based project was successful.

This is the last quarterly management coordination meeting for the nuclear island project. Since the establishment of quarterly high-level coordination mechanism for the unclear island project in 2007, 38 meetings have been held. During the meetings, 1135 action items have been formulated and completed, which effectively promote the completion and key design of the major milestones, purchasing, the settlement of construction safety problems, thus promoting the AP1000-based project and the communication, support and cooperation of all participation units.

During the US trip, Wei Suo and the delegation visited the headquarter of Westinghouse to communicate with He Ruize, CEO of Westinghouse, on key issues of strategic cooperation between both sides, and toured the instrument control center of Westinghouse and its overhaul service center at Walts Mill.

The concerned personnel of SNPTC Engineering Management Department and Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research & Design Institute attended the meeting.
