On May 8, Chairman Qian Zhimin met Jacques Regaldo, Chairman of World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), at the SPIC Beijing headquarters. Both parties exchanged views on the establishment of the WANO Shanghai Center.

Qian introduced the development and long-term goals of nuclear power business of SPIC. He said that SPIC supports WANO in establishment of the Shanghai Center, and is willing to actively participate in related preparatory work to build the Shanghai Center into an important international center for WANO, and make due contributions to the safe development of nuclear power in the world. Qian hopes that WANO will continue to provide guidance and assistance to SPIC, and support the SPIC in continuously improving the operational safety and performance of nuclear power.

Regaldo said that in the future, about half of the nuclear power units under operation worldwide will be set in Asia. Once established, the Shanghai Center will supplement with Tokyo Center, providing regional members with better global service and support. He also thanked SPIC for its support in preparing the establishment of the Shanghai Center, and stated that WANO will continue to provide necessary technical support for Sanmen and Haiyang NPPs.

The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), established in May 1989 in Moscow, is an international organization composed of global nuclear power operators. It has been committed to improving the safety of nuclear power and promoting the sustainable development of global nuclear power business by sharing the global nuclear power operation and practice experience. Under the proposal and promotion of the Chinese members including SPIC, in June 2017, the Board of Directors of WANO voted to approve the establishment of international regional center in Shanghai unanimously, the fifth one of WANO around the world.

As one of China’s three major nuclear power developers and operators, SPIC undertakes the important strategic task of developing Gen III Passive PWR CAP1400 with the world advanced level. The CAP1400 demonstration project invested by SPIC in Shidaowan of Rongcheng County, Shandong Province, has been listed as a major R&D project of large-scale advanced pressurized water reactor (PWR). The project has passed the general safety review of International Atomic Energy Agency. At present, the CAP1400 demonstration project has made important progress in developing markets in South Africa and Turkey.
